This subject is among the most frequent in de Chirico’s works. From his childhood until the last years of his life, he drew and painted horses, alone or in pairs, sometimes inserted into a variety of contexts. This sketch shows a horse rearing slightly on its back legs, with a tension which is lost in the rear part, which is positioned as at a placid trot. A figure just sketched on the horse’s back can be made out, and dynamic signs that allow the fast and nervy execution to be guessed at.
